Electrical Muscle Stimulation
(E-STIM)
Electrical muscle stimulation, aka e-stim or electrostim, is an adjunct physical therapy modality often used to reignite muscles' ability to contract. Enhancing muscle contraction may help you control pain, get stronger, increase physical functioning, retrain movements you may have lost, and/or manage inflammation.

For muscle recovery, E-Stim therapy sends signals to targeted muscles to make them contract. (flexing your muscles) Electro stim therapy uses electrical pulses to mimic the action of signals coming from neurons (cells in your nervous system). These mild electrical currents target either muscles or nerves. By repeating contraction and relaxation cycles, those muscles gain strength, E-stim can also "train" muscles to respond to natural signals. The ability to essentially relearn basic motor functions is an incredibly beneficial advantage for stroke survivors, providing them with valuable support in their recovery process.
